Make your own jewelry

Bali’s clans of gold and silversmiths have been mastering the art of fine jewellery for centuries. They are mostly located in the villages of the Gianyar regency, particularly Celuk, Mas, and Ubud. They often have showrooms alongside workshops where you can observe the creation process. Some even hand you the tweezers and wireworks to learn from the local artists how to create your own piece to take home.

In Ubud look out for: Chez Monique, Studio Perak, John Hardy Workshop and Showroom, or WS Art Studio.

Watch white herons at the sunset

So here’s the deal: during the peak period (around 5pm – 6pm), up to 20,000 herons can be seen dancing and singing in the trees. They watch you, you watch them. With a cold drink in your hand. Just find a small wooden house in the middle of a rice-field owned by an old lady. (Oh, and watch out for poo-bombs.)

The whole spectacle takes place in a tiny village Petulu, a short drive from Ubud. Just drive through Jalan Tirta Tawar until you see the village sign.
