MEALS DURING THE TRIP
WELCOME TO MAKASSAR
Greetings from Makassar, the capital of Sulawesi! With around two million inhabitants in this busy trade center, Makassar is the gateway to all islands of East Indonesia. Possessing one of the best-preserved examples of Dutch architecture in Indonesia, Makassar’s harbor continues to be guarded by Fort Rotterdam. A Gowanese fort dating back to 1545 once stood here, but failed to keep out the Dutch. The original fort was rebuilt in Dutch style after group is part of a larger group called the Tukangbesi Islands. Far Horizon Indonesia. All rights reserved. the Treaty of Bungaya in 1667. While parts of the crumbling wall have been left untouched, it does provide an interesting comparison to the restored buildings.
MAKASSAR – TANA TORAJA
Begin your day with breakfast and afterwards, take a drive on the Trans-Sulawesi Highway to Makassar, Sulawesi’s capital. During this trip we will visit the traditional villages of the Bugis, who occupy the southern part of the island and are known for their ability to build “phinisi” boats and construct houses set on stilts. We will stop at the beach of Kupa to have lunch and enjoy the astonishing tropical landscape as well. Before reaching Tana Toraja, we can stop again to have a drink and view Batu Kabobong, the “Erotic Mountain”. After an hour and a half by car we will arrive to our hotel in Rantepao – Tana Toraja.
During these days we will visit the region of Tana Toraja making stops at the traditional villages of Palawa and Kete’ Kesu, with houses shaped like hulled boats, and ancient grave sites at Lemo, Londa or Kambira. We will also visit colorful markets and if a traditional ritual is being held, join in participation and assist. Next up is the mountain area of Batutumonga, where we can make a moderate trek of two hours walking through the settlements to see how the Toraja live in the mountains and enjoy the incredible nature of this region.
TREKKING RANTEPAO – LIMBONG
Today we make our way to the village of Salu (12 km from Rantepao), the starting point of an unprecedented journey through the south area of Tana Toraja. From this point we start our way up through the valley of the Maiting River, walking through not-so-beaten paths, rice fields, coffee plantations and small Toraja house settlements. For lunch a picnic is provided and come nightfall we lodge in a typical local house of the beautiful village of Limbong. [Approx. 4 hour trek (2 hour ascent + 2 hour flat)]
LIMBONG – RAFTING MAULU RIVER
After breakfast, we stroll down to the Maiting River (approx. 1 hour) and once there, we break out the rafting gear for some sightseeing (Level 2 – Easy). This is a formidable visual experience passing by the deep canyons, natural waterfalls and villages, able to see the wildlife such as iguanas and tropical birds. Afterwards we return to our hotel in Rantepao.
TORAJA – PALOPO – SENGKANG
After finishing breakfast we head north, departing to the village of Palopo, discovering Sulawesi’s lush tropical forest along the way. Once in Palopo, we take the road towards Sengkang in Bugis’ territory. After lunch, we visit Tempe Lake by canoe where the Bugis fishing community lives in floating houses in the center of the lake and only leave their houses to trade. Here we can visit their floating house for a while and enjoy some hospitality by having tea with them. We end the day back at the village of Sengkang where we lodge overnight.
