BLOODY PASOLA FESTIVAL - SUMBA ADVENTURE: ITINERARY AND DETAILS
MEALS DURING THE TRIP
We will meet in the domestic terminal of the airport in Denpasar at 7:00 in the morning. You will be given your tickets and we will board our flight to Tambolaka in western Sumba. After about an hour – long flight we shall reach the destination. Ever been to Eastern Indonesia before? Well, it’s quite different from Bali, let us tell you that! Time has stopped here decades ago and people still live the old way. We will find our shelter in clean and comfortable accommodation – and visit traditional market in the town. Keep your eye out for the weird stuff they sell here. Later, after lunch we will also bring you to the nearby villages Tarung and Wai Tabar to have a glimpse on everyday tribal life here.
Good morning. We gonna wake you up early today, even before sunrise. Grab your breakfast and be ready for an adventure! First we will drive to Wanukaka where the crowd will be already getting close-grained. Nobody in this area been sleeping well last night – for residents of the entire island today is the most exciting day of the year. Before the Pasola can begin, priests in full ceremonial dress must first wade into the ocean to examine the nyale worms at dawn. From the numbers and appearance of the nyale, a prediction is made as to how good the year’s harvest will be. Fighting then Far Horizon Indonesia. All rights reserved. begins on the beach and continues inland. We will try to get ourselves the best spots to observe the battles and we will spend whole day watching it. You better be quick with your camera coz there is going to be a lot of action! After breaks for lunch and dinner we will return to our hotel late at night.
SECOND DAY OF THE FESTIVAL
Depending on the festival’s schedule (which is – like everything in Indonesia – pretty flexible) today we will continue to watch the bloody spectacle of Pasola or we will hit the road and see some of the remote villages of Kodi area, famous from the hundreds years old stone graves and over ten meters high roofs of the houses. We can have our lunch on pristine Kodi Beach (Sumba has one of the best beaches in Indonesia) and swim in the ocean. Later we can see some coffee and spices plantations and return to the hotel in the afternoon.
TIME TO GO BACK
Good morning! Had your breakfast yet? Then grab your gears and let’s go to the airport. Time to come back to Bali. You’d be surprised how modern and civilized you’ll find it after the trip to Sumba.
