MEETING WITH ORANGUTANS: ITINERARY & DETAILS

WELCOME TO BORNEO

BAPALLAS ISLAND

Today you will continue your journey up the Rungan River. You will cruise calmly along passing local villages and as promised your first stop will be an orangutan release islands of Nyaru Menteng. Here you will get to meet with and see the efforts of the biologists and volunteers of the BOS Orangutan Foundation Center. This place is used to re-adopt captured or abandoned orangutans back to the wild. Many orangutans are losing their homes to rapid deforestation though out the island.

Lunch will be served on board as the boat cruises to the small river village of Kanarkan. Keep your eyes peeled as you may get to see some local wildlife such as Proboscis Monkeys, Red Langurs, and Brahrnini Kites. Kanarkan is home to the DayakNgaju Tribe, Dayak people were once feared for their head hunting raids and great magic. Today they live more peacefully sustaining from agriculture, selling forest products, weaving, and wood carving. You will be met by the village elders who will escort you through their village homes, rubber collecting, gardens and other daily village activities. You will get to try some local delicacies and tea or coffee before heading back to the boat for another lovely dinner served on the serene river.

JUNGLE ADVENTURE

After breakfast you will disembark from your boat home at the town of Sampit. From here you will catch a short flight to Pangkalan Bun. From here you will change your transport to the “Klotok” boat. You will take another jungle river cruise where you will be able to spot many endemic species and maybe even a crocodile. In the evening you will have a dinner and overnight in the simple lodge in the jungle.

ORANGUTANS REHABILITATION CENTRE

After breakfast you will get back on Klotok and cruise along the river for two hours until you reach Camp Leakey. Camp Leakey is another rehabilitation center for the endangered orangutans. After viewing the center and getting to know the staff you will go on a short trek into the TanjungPuting National Park, where you can explore and admire beauty of this wild sanctuary.

Lunch will be served on board as you cruise to some special viewing platforms where you can view the orangutans in the wild. For the evening you will stay in a jungle lodge of Camp Leaky with a nice dinner.

GOODBYE WITH BORNEO

You will have one last jungle cruise with breakfast served onboard as you cruise to the town of Kumai. From here a car and driver will take you to the airport and send you back on your way to Jakarta or off to your next destination.
